If you’re experiencing symptoms related to the menopause transition (such as hot flashes, insomnia, or low libido to name a few), then Elektra is probably for you (with a few exceptions for, like new cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and anyone taking hormones for fertility or gender-affirming care). Sometimes, people may be experiencing symptoms that aren’t due to menopause; in those cases, Elektra clinicians may refer you to in-person care with another clinician.

Nope, Elektra is designed to complement but not replace your local care. Since we don’t do in-person visits (just telemedicine), it’s important for you to continue your care with a local gynecologist and/or primary care provider for regular pelvic exams, issues that require a physical evaluation, and any non-menopause concerns.

Looking for a new provider for in-person care? Elektra clinicians can provide referrals as needed.

Less than 20% of OB/GYNs receive menopause training in their residency programs, and others simply don’t spend time on it during a visit. This means that many women who consult their clinicians don’t receive the care they deserve (in fact, 70% of women who seek menopause care don’t receive treatment).

Elektra is trying to fill this gap with clinicians who are specially trained in menopause — although it’s important to note that we are designed to complement, not replace, your in-person care.

Your Elektra care team is made up of a clinician and a Coach. Elektra’s clinicians are women’s health experts who have sub-specialized in menopause and women’s health at midlife. They can see patients in select states and prescribe medication as needed. Coaches provide non-clinical support in the form of symptom-specific lifestyle recommendations (nutrition, exercise, etc), education, and emotional support.

Unlike Elektra Clinicians who provide telemedicine care in select states (with labs and prescriptions), Coaches can see patients in all states for non-clinical support.

The Coaches are healthcare professionals you can think of as part-accountability partners, part-menopause doulas. They work 1:1 with patients to help them feel educated and empowered during their menopause journey, which comes to life in the form of symptom-specific education, lifestyle interventions, supplement information, and product recommendations.

Elektra clinicians are more than happy to collaborate with your existing care team and can communicate through call, fax, and email. We also offer secure, direct communication with clinical practices that have an EHR that synchs with Athena.

How much, and what we share with is entirely up you. We can do what works best for you and your care team, whether that’s coordinating directly with a specialist, or providing you with a care summary that you can discuss at your routine physical.

Elektra clinicians can prescribe FDA-approved medications (both hormonal and non-hormonal) and recommend supplements. All prescriptions will be sent to your preferred pharmacy — we don’t sell them directly.

If you’re up to date on your follow-ups, then we’d be happy to refill your medication without seeing you for a visit. (Typically, once you’re on medication and a stable dose has been established, we ask to see you for a follow-up every 6 months.)

Although the patch shortage is affecting pharmacies throughout the country, you might be able to find a better supply through these methods:

• A mail-order pharmacy: you can typically find a name on the back of your insurance card (examples include ExpressScripts or OptumRx)
• Small, local pharmacy 
• Cash pay options like CostPlus or HRT Club

If you’re not able to find the patches at all, we might consider switching you to an alternate version of estradiol, like the gel, spray, or vaginal ring. Here’s a helpful summary from GoodRx (we are not affiliated with them).

Although the shortage has mostly impacted estrogen patches, there are signs that it’s also starting to affect oral micronized progesterone, which is an important part of any MHT regimen since it provides uterine protection. Alternatives to consider here include a progestin IUD, combined patch (estradiol + progestogen), or Duavee (oral estrogen + bazedoxifene for uterine protection).

Patients ask us all time…do you need to test my hormones before starting hormone therapy or during treatment?

Major menopause guidelines actually do not recommend checking your estrogen levels to guide treatment. Why? Because hormone levels, especially during perimenopause, can be incredibly volatile. Estrogen can be high one day and really low the next. A single blood test is really just a snapshot of that moment. It’s not really a reliable measure of what’s happening overall. Plus, if your results come back “normal” but you’re still experiencing symptoms, does that mean you don’t deserve treatment? Of course not!

And once someone starts on hormone therapy, there’s also no proven target estrogen level that we’re trying to hit. Two people can have the exact same number and feel *completely* different. So instead of chasing lab values, we focus on the things that actually matter: are your hot flashes and other symptoms improving? Are you sleeping better? Is your mood or brain fog improving? Hormone therapy is about treating symptoms and improving quality of life, not trying to hit a specific lab number.

Yes! Although current research does not suggest that modern Menopause Hormone Therapy (MHT) causes breast cancer, it would be dangerous to use MHT in the presence of an undetected breast cancer. For anyone who develops breast cancer while taking MHT, it’s important to stop using MHT right away, as it can make breast cancer worse. For most individuals, annual mammography is the best way to screen for breast cancer, and it’s especially important to continue consistent annual mammography while using MHT.

Elektra clinicians can prescribe both hormonal AND non-hormonal prescription treatments as well as evidence-backed supplements. We don’t prescribe compounded or non-FDA-approved medications.

Yes, menopause care at Elektra includes the treatment of menopause-related weight gain and metabolic syndrome through FDA-approved GLP-1 prescribing. A clinical care appointment is necessary to determine whether GLP-1s would be an appropriate treatment option.

Yes, absolutely! Elektra accepts self-pay patients and can provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance carrier for out-of-network reimbursement. And remember, even if Elektra isn’t covered by your insurance plan, your labs and medications likely will be.

Without insurance, the cash pay price is $249 for your initial visit, followed by $149 for follow-up visits.

If you’re in-network with Elektra, you’ll just have to pay the cost of your regular copay or coinsurance. If you’re out-of-network, the cash pay price is $249 for your initial visit (30 minutes), followed by $149 for subsequent 15-minute visits.

If you have a plan that covers coaching, your visit will cost you $0. Otherwise, coaching costs $99/session.

It depends! Every plan is different, and things like copays, deductibles, and co-insurance vary. Our clinicians are typically considered to be specialists, so the specialist copay would apply.

Yep, you can use your HSA or FSA card to pay for Elektra care visits!

Insurance is complicated, and co-pays, deductibles, and co-insurance vary depending on your plan. On the day of your visit, we’ll charge the estimated copay to your card on file. After your insurance has processed your claim, we’ll charge your card on file for the balance due. You’ll also receive statements via mail or email and can pay for any balance due via your patient portal. If you’re not using insurance, we’ll charge your card on file on the day of your visit.

Some insurance plans may require that you receive a referral from your PCP. We recommend checking with your insurance prior to a visit to confirm whether a referral is required.

If a referral is required, you should call your PCP to request one. We can provide you the necessary information you’ll need to give to your PCP. Please note, it can take time for referrals to be completed, so please be sure to request one from your provider at least a week in advance.

Nope! You are only responsible for your clinical visit co-pay and/or coinsurance as determined by your health plan. If you receive a prescription, there may be a cost as well — but our clinicians do their best to only prescribe medications that are covered by your insurance. There is no membership fee.
